Peak season tomatoes are the talk of the farmers market this time of year! From cherry tomatoes to heirloom varieties as big as your hand, these tomatoes are a tasty treat you can’t find anywhere else. Farmers take pride in their flavorful tomatoes and for a good reason! Tomatoes take plenty of time and patience for an abundant harvest. The tomatoes we’re enjoying now were originally started from seed way back in January, and transplanted to fields after the last frost in April. When you consider the 7 months of care these tomatoes have received, it’s easy to see why we’re ready to tell the world how delicious they are! 🤠🍅
However, season doesn’t last forever! When the summer nights stay above 80 degrees, you’ll start see fewer flowers on your tomato plants, and that means the harvest is coming to a close. The tomato fruit on plants now is all you’re likely to get until the temperature starts to cool off. 🥵
But lucky for us in North Texas, we have two seasons fresh tomatoes! Tomatoes grow beautifully in the fall here in DFW. If you’re a backyard gardener or farmer, now is the time to get your second round of tomato plants in the soil! It will be a challenge to keep them safe from too much sun during July and August, but your tomatoes will be thrilled by the end of September with plenty of fruit in October and even November if the weather is warm.
The key takeaway here — stock up on summer tomatoes now! If you wait too long for your weekend farmers market trip, you might miss out on flavorful tomatoes and end up waiting months for another juicy bite! See you in The Shed this weekend to enjoy tasty tomato season!
