One thing to know about Texas summers – It sure is hot! While there’s no getting around the heat this time of year, there’s still plenty of ways to cool off with fresh Texas produce! Farmers market lovers are outdoor people – if the sun is out, so are we! That means it’s important to go the extra mile to stay hydrated and fuel our bodies with fresh clean food. We recently shared delicious herbs to add to any recipe to help you feel cooler, even in the soaring temps. This week, we’re looking at summer produce that will keep you hydrated and feeling cool as a cucumber. 😎 Some fresh fruits and vegetables are perfectly built for the task! Watermelons, cantaloupes, cucumbers, zucchini, and tomatoes are all abundant during the summer season, and are over 90% water (talk about juicy!) In addition to fiber, vitamins, and minerals, produce is packed full of water making it a great option to add additional hydration to your day.
As temps approach 100+ degrees in the coming weeks, remember these additional tips to stay safe in the sun!
-
Drink 8 – 10 Glasses of Water Every Day and Eat Hydrating Produce
-
Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine (especially if you’ll be outside for extended periods)
-
Opt for Light Colored Clothes and Avoid Dark or Heavy Materials
-
Avoid Strenuous or Extended Activities Outdoors from 11 AM – 3 PM (the hottest part of the day)
-
Watch Out for Dizziness, Nausea, or Headaches + Get Help Right Away! – these are signs of heat exhaustion.
So how does hydrating with water-containing produce compare with simply drinking water? Drinking water is still the BEST way to stay hydrated! However, hydrating with fresh produce is your second line of defense to keep you feeling your best in the summer heat. Health benefits from essential electrolytes to abundant antioxidants can keep your body feeling balanced and ready for a day in the sun! With that in mind, we’re packing a fresh salad picnic with plenty of water for our next outdoor adventure.
