Summer is the easiest time of year to embrace seasonal eating thanks to the abundant fruit and vegetable options available at the Dallas Farmers Market, and with each newsletter, we always let you know what’s currently in season in Texas and what’s specifically available at The Shed. By incorporating this seasonal produce into your recipes, you’ll be rewarded with meals full of flavor, texture, and dense nutrition, all while supporting local farmers and communities.
Our five-part series pairing picnic basket bites with local park locations, thanks to recommendations from Outside, Texas (https://outsidetexas.com/), is meant to inspire the discovery of all of our fresh produce/product varieties and the incredible outdoor summer fun North Texas has to offer.
This week, DFM invites you to head to the Shed to find all the fixings for Cold Cut Sammies – DYI or Grab ’n Go, then take your history-loving dad on an adventure to Airfield Falls Trailhead and Conservation Park (https://trinitytrailsfw.com/airfieldfalls/). Familiar to some and a hidden gem to others, Airfield Falls Trailhead boasts Tarrant County’s largest natural waterfall. Beyond its scenic beauty, the trailhead supports vital native wildlife and serves as a stopover for monarch butterflies during their northward migration. Located on the east side of the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base, the park also features parts from a McDonnell Douglas C-9 aircraft. In October 2017, it gained historical recognition with the installation of two Texas Historic Markers (#18383 and #18384 (https://www.hmdb.org/results.asp?Search=Place&?Search=Place&Town=Westworth%20Village&State=Texas)). You’ll find the trailhead in Westworth Village on Pumphrey Drive, just minutes from downtown Fort Worth.
