MUSK BE CANTALOUPE SEASON

What a re-leaf! Cooler temperatures and some much-needed rain are exactly what farmers are hoping for during fall planting and the transition season out of summer. Many farmers in North Texas already have their first fall crops seeded – these tender starts will need plenty of attention in their first few weeks to take root and build strength during the last weeks of hot August. Even summer crops are loving the extra dose of rain! Many of our favorite summer crops enjoy an easy-breezy fall here in Texas where even cooler temps still don’t mean it’s cold outside. While one-fruit wonders such as peaches will be wrapping up for the season, those lovely melons, tomatoes, peppers, and squash will all enjoy an encore until the end of October when root vegetables steal the show.

Speaking of melons, it musk be cantaloupe season in The Shed! Watermelons get all the hype, but cantaloupes are the creamy sweet unsung heroes of summer. You can always smell a good melon before you see it! Perfectly ripe and ready to grace your plate, it’s the perfect time to pick up melons for fruit salads, sorbets, and –oh, for sure—aguas frescas. Shop locally in The Shed and make the most of summer fruits!
