April 22nd might be the official day of recognition, but here at the Dallas Farmers Market we strive to make every day Earth Day by focusing on ways we all can give and take in support of our cherished environment, and this weekend is no exception.

Join us Saturday, April 26th, and welcome back our Earth-loving friends CheckSammy as they collect electronics and textiles for recycling.

Most of us are familiar with recycling things like glass, plastic, and cardboard, but electronics, textiles, and other mixed-material and hard-to-recycle items are often overlooked or disposed of improperly simply because it’s difficult to know what to do with them. Landfilling electronics and textiles have serious environmental consequences as electronics can leach hazardous materials, like lead or mercury, into soil and water, and textiles release methane as they decompose and contribute to microplastic pollution.

When these items are recycled and repurposed responsibly, we reduce their environmental impact and recover value. Electronics contain recoverable materials like metals and plastics that can be reused. Old clothing can be shredded into fibers and used to make new products like insulation, padding, or even new textiles. By recycling/reusing both these items, landfill waste is reduced and resources are conserved.

Once you drop off your items, CheckSammy’s team sorts all materials by type and prepares them for recycling by their network of partners. Electronics go through a secure process that includes de-manufacturing, shredding, and material separation to recover metals and components for reuse, while ensuring that all data is securely erased from devices. Textiles are aggregated to meet the volume requirements for responsible recycling, and are then shredded into fibers and prepped for reuse. Through all their thorough procedures, CheckSammy ensures that as much of the material as possible is diverted from landfills.

Are you ready to purge those closets yet? Haul it over to the DFM on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., and let CheckSammy help all of us by correctly disposing of electronics and textiles.

We are also featuring a kid’s composting workshop hosted by Amigos Composting on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. And for both Saturday and Sunday, Buttercup Art is hosting a DIY floral bookmark workshop (9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Sat/10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Sun), Window to the Wild is bring by some friends (10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. both Sat/Sun), and our 2 O’clock Tasting is featuring a delightfully springy Pea Pasta Salad.

It looks to be a lovely North Texas spring weekend! Please join us in our Earth Day Celebration, and learn how every little individual action adds up to a better world for all.
