Labor Day Weekend is good for two things – Day Trips + Backyard BBQs. Visiting your local farmers market is a great way to accomplish both! Did you know there’s a name for the trips you take to farmers markets, farm stands, and even pumpkin patches (yes, we’re dreaming already). Those visits are known as Agri-tourism – an important part of how many farms generate revenue and how guests connect to their local food landscape. Agri-tourism may be a new word to some of us, but the idea is familiar! Remember, school field trips to local dairy farms or even to the stockyards? That exposure to agricultural practices and familiarity with the food system are classic examples of Agri-tourism, which has seen tremendous growth over the past two decades. The next time you’re looking for an exciting adventure close to home, consider visiting a local farm such as Mars Hill Flower Farm in Ferris, TX or Bonton Farms just south of the Dallas Farmers Market! While not every farm is open to visitors, many urban farms are excited to welcome guests to share their stories and encourage local support.

Similarly, even a visit to the Dallas Farmers Market is a form of Agri-tourism! Visiting our market is an opportunity to meet with growers and producers to learn more about how your food is grown. Mama Ida’s Community Garden located at the back of The Shed is a great way to see how food can be grown in a small urban space, as well as an opportunity see meet the Hens of DFM! Farmers Markets are a great way to spend the day learning about local agriculture without the travel. Plus, you get to take home lots of delicious fresh produce and locally-made goods to share in the kitchen!

After an afternoon of Agri-tourism, you’ll have extra time to cook and enjoy your farmers market haul during your Labor Day grilling! Locally raised meats are the perfect crowd-pleasers. Between the meats from JuHa Ranch, Gabriel Ranch, 413 Farms, and Hendrix Family Farm, you’re sure to find the ideal cut for your BBQ. Top it off with artisan marinades, rubs, and sauces from vendors in The Shed like @gaias.cuisine, @losprimanosbbqrubs, @newtonssouthern, and @rikasmarinade!
