For over 80 years, the Dallas Farmers Market has made it our mission to cultivate a more sustainable lifestyle for all of North Texas, curate the freshest locally grown seasonal items, and create a place where neighbors become friends and local businesses become family. August 3rd – 9th marks the 26th annual National Farmers Market Week, making it the perfect time to visit and experience all the benefits a farmers market has to offer, including a few you might not have thought of:

  • Improving access to healthy food, especially in areas with limited grocery store options.
  • Showcasing superior produce full of flavor and higher nutrient content compared to items that have been shipped long distances.
  • Supporting sustainable farming practices that protect soil, water, and ecosystems.
  • Creating opportunities for small businesses and startups in agriculture and food production.
  • Keeping money circulating within the local economy.
  • Providing educational opportunities on healthy eating, gardening, and local agriculture.

None of these benefits are possible without the farmers themselves though, which is where your continued support reinforces all the love we invest right here at the DFM.

For many small and mid-size family farmers, especially those new to agriculture, farmers markets are critical, offering one of the few low-barrier entry points into farming. By buying directly from local farmers, you’re not just getting the freshest food, you’re also helping farmers stay in business. In fact, farmers who sell at markets have a 10% higher chance of remaining in business compared to those using traditional sales channels. And with 3.5 times more U.S. farmers over the age of 65 than under 35, supporting the next generation through local farmers markets is essential to the future of American agriculture. Even the smallest purchase plays a powerful role in protecting rural livelihoods and farmland.

So head to The Shed and make the connections that make a big difference. With almost 100 vendors each weekend, there are endless opportunities to ask how they got their start or which product is their favorite. And since our long list of dedicated vendors come back year after year, it’s the perfect place to build community and create friendships while gathering delicious discoveries. See you there!
