Strawberries, the first official fruit of spring, have hit The Shed, and we’d be jammed if we didn’t spread the news of all their goodness!

Not only are they a delicious, nutritious, and refreshing treat, strawberries are packed with water and fiber, making them highly hydrating, beneficial for digestion, and an excellent choice when searching for a low sugar/low calorie/filling snack. Just eight strawberries offer more vitamin C than an orange, and are an excellent source of vitamin B9, a key nutrient for cell regeneration and energy production. What truly elevates strawberries to nutritional superfood status though is their rich supply of antioxidants. They are loaded with anthocyanins and ellagic acid flavonoids which are potent compounds renowned for their ability to combat oxidative stress, reduce inflammation, and promote overall health. These antioxidants are associated with a host of benefits, including improved heart health, better cognitive function, and potential cancer-fighting properties.

Ready to enjoy this in-season treat? Head to The Shed and Kelley Produce where Keith Kelley will provide you with only the sweetest strawberries directly sourced (as with all that they have to offer) from small, family-owned farms.

Please keep in mind that strawberry season is brief. Kelley Produce will have strawberries every weekend in The Shed until the end of May, but just in case you miss them there, make sure to swing by Kelley Produce in The Market, open every day of the week from 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m., to see if they have extras to grab. Known for sourcing some of the freshest and best produce grown in Texas and beyond, you can even contact Keith, or co-owner Janiece Black, to arrange specialty produce or wholesale orders.

A few pointers in strawberry care – don’t rinse strawberries under water until you’re ready to eat them as moisture speeds up the spoiling process, and if you can’t finish all that you’ve picked, preserve the season by making jams and jellies, or by freezing perfectly ripe fruit to use later in smoothies.

For an easy way to enjoy strawberries, swing by our 2 O’clock Tastings on Saturday, May 17th and Sunday, May 18th for a pairing with Yogurt and Honey. Once you fall in love, go visit our vendors to grab the ingredients:

  • Strawberries available from Kelley Produce and Williams garden
  • Honey available from Honey Apple Farms, Lonestar Specialty Foods, and The Nutty Side
  • Greek Yogurt available from Ganske Farm

This Saturday and Sunday look to be one of the last “cooler” North Texas weekends for the foreseeable future, so get out to the Dallas Farmers Market to enjoy the warmth and support local by shopping seasonal. You’ll be berry happy you did!
