Strawberry season is in full swing (but it’s short and sweet, just like a famous cake we all know)! Snacking on fresh strawberries is a springtime must-do. 🍓✔️Pick up a pint (or 4) of the first fruits of spring, then dream up strawberry delights with us! We’re thinking strawberry mint tea, strawberry goat cheese grilled cheese, and especially strawberries + whipped cream! 😋 Find strawberries in The Shed this weekend straight from Sanchez Farms in Poteet, TX – the Strawberry Capital of Texas!
What makes local strawberries so much better? 🤓 We’re glad you asked! There are some fruits you can buy at the grocery store without major flavor disappointments…but strawberries aren’t one of them. If you’ve ever been let down by a red-on-the-outside, but sour-and-white-on-the-inside strawberry, then this season is for you. Redemption is sweet when it’s locally grown! Most strawberries available in grocery stores are grown in California and Mexico, meaning they need to be picked earlier and shipped to stores across the US; often resulting in underwhelming strawberries. Local growers have time to let strawberries fully ripen while nature works its magic in the field! Ripe strawberries are sweet through every bite, without the sour center.
Once you’ve got your farmers market haul home, it’s important to properly store strawberries! As a soft fruit, strawberries have a short shelf life but there are a few things you can do to keep them in their prime for longer (hint: it’s not collagen).
Use the following tips to keep your strawberries fresh for about 7 – 10 days:
  1. Don’t Prewash Your Strawberries – Rinsing the strawberries before storage can cause them to soften or even begin to mold. Keep them nice and dry before storing them! Washing right before you eat them.
  2. Store the strawberries in a single layer in a dry container with an airtight lid. A large glass storage container works well. This avoids crushing the strawberries on the bottom of the container.
  3. Keep the container in the crisper drawer where it won’t become too cold and begin to freeze. Frozen moisture inside the strawberries will cause them to soften as they thaw.
Right before eating, rinse and dig into your delicious local strawberries!
