We all have different reasons for shopping small and supporting local businesses. But, as we celebrate Black History Month this February, one resounding reason we shop local is to support Black-owned Businesses. If you’re wondering why shopping equates to celebration and support, we’ve got some answers for you.
There are 3 big things, and so many small ones, that define why shopping with Black-owned businesses is both an Impactful and Effective way to celebrate Black History Month.
-
Local means DIRECT –Shopping with Black-owned Businesses supports the prosperity and success of Black business owners in a direct way so that 100% of sales and proceeds are funneled back into the economic stability and growth of their business. Many products sold by major retailers can support the celebration of Black History Month in abstract or general ways, but they often lack an authentic connection to any community.
-
Small businesses GROW and PROTECT culture –It’s almost impossible to find a small business that doesn’t blossom out of genuine passion and experience. Small business owners bring their inspiration, worldview, and culture into the products and services they offer. Whether it be food, fashion, art, entertainment, or education – Black-owned businesses can both build community through shared experiences, and bridge divides by showcasing what is one-of-a-kind and unforgettable about their own culture.
-
Community “BUY-IN” starts with spending –This point might be the most definitive. Community buy-in means active support and participation from.. you! Community buy-in for Black-owned Businesses means spending real dollars (not just “likes” 😉) on products, goods, and services. Supporting Black-owned Businesses this month and every day leads to a healthier, more sustainable community for us all.
