If you find yourself in Detroit, TX in summer then Smitty’s Kiomatia Blueberry Farm isn’t far away! Planted in the 60s and tended with care, the land has been kept by the careful watch of family to create the oasis it is today. Even in the summer heat, a refreshing breeze finds it way through towering pines that protect the blueberries from heavy winds. Acres of Northern Highbush and Rabbit Eye blueberries are bursting with fruit ripe for picking.

While the average age of farmers continues to rise, Smitty’s is owned and operated by a surprisingly young entrepreneur. Owner David grew up visiting the blueberry farm that sits alongside his family property. When he learned that the original family owners planned to sell the grove, he decided to purchase the blueberry farm and keep the legacy alive.

With fresh ideas, Smitty’s (named for David’s father) has big plans coming that will rejuvenate the operation. This year David will add an additional 300 blueberry bushes to their current 1000 bush grove. In the works are also nightly concerts and cabin rentals in the near future!

Ultimately David wants to ensure that the blueberry farm keeps bringing smiles to families for generations to come. “People come from all over to fill up their buckets. Seeing the smiles and the families enjoying the blueberries is what it’s all about.” We can’t wait to see the expansion of Smitty’s Kiomatia Blueberry Farm and the grand plans to come!
