Farmers of any scale are able provide fresh food to our community by growing nutritious produce and dedicating their attention to stewardship of their land. Rolling hills of crop rows come to mind for many of us when we think of agriculture, but a fresh wave of micro-farms are changing the face of local agriculture by defying conventional wisdom. Tending closely to heirloom crops and focusing foremost on soil quality, allows micro-farms to build a better farm from the ground-up. The iconic image of a conventional farm does not apply to the intersection of art and science found on a small farm.

The scale of a small or micro-farm can range from an over-productive garden to a several acre farm managed by a family team. The smaller the farm, often, the greater the diversity of products and creativity of the farmers. Every square foot becomes an opportunity to improve soil quality, support plant health, and create a more sustainable ecosystem within the farm. At the Dallas Farmers Market, Braga Farms is a shining example of a farm that takes strides in creating a permacultural environment on their 1 acre farm in Irving, TX. Shop with them every Saturday and Sunday in The Shed and learn more about their farm here.
