OKTOBERFEST NOW AT THE DFM

This weekend, get a taste of Deutschland right here at the Dallas Farmers Market, no passport required. Start in The Shed, where DFM vendors are serving up plenty of German-inspired eats with a Texas twist. Then head to Pearl St. Plaza, where DALtoberfest is taking over with music, games, contests, and plenty of reasons to raise a stein and say, “Prost!”

Break out the lederhosen, dust off your stein, and get ready for the first annual DALtoberfest, taking over Pearl St. Plaza at the Dallas Farmers Market on Saturday, September 26 through Sunday, September 27. This free, two-day Oktoberfest celebration features Bavarian-inspired food and drinks, local vendors, live music, games, costumes, and plenty of friendly competition. Saturday’s festivities kick off at 11:00 a.m. with the DJ in Pearl St. Plaza, followed by the official cask tapping at 11:30 a.m. Then, put your strength to the test during the Stein Hoisting Competition, with the women’s competition at 12:30 p.m. and the men’s at 12:45 p.m. At 2:00 p.m., four-legged festivalgoers get their moment in the spotlight during the Pet Costume Contest, before the day rolls to a finish with Barrel Races at 3:30 p.m.

Sunday keeps the fest going with the DJ starting at 11:00 a.m. at the Pearl St. Plaza Arch, followed by Oktoberfest Music Bingo at 12:30 p.m. At 2:00 p.m., festivalgoers can show off their best Bavarian looks and finest facial hair during the Human Costume & Beard Contest. Then, get ready to cheer on some short legs and big personalities as the weekend wraps up with the highly anticipated Wiener Dog Races at 3:30 p.m.

Come hungry wearing your best Oktoberfest attire, and bring friends, family, and pups along for the fun. Admission is free (please R.S.V.P. at Eventbrite), so stop by for an hour or make a whole weekend of it. You bring the crew, 2nd Tap brings the Prost!

Family Willkommen

There’s plenty of Oktoberfest fun to welcome the whole family to the Dallas Farmers Market this weekend. On Saturday, September 26, enjoy Balloon Art by Bender from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. On Sunday, balloon fun runs from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Both days, little festivalgoers can stop by our Kids’ Activity from 10:00 a.m. to noon to make a German Pretzel Craft, then stick around for a German Potato Salad Tasting at 12:30 p.m. in The Shed.

And don’t forget to say cheese! This week’s pumpkin pick is Cheddar, a striking specialty winter squash named for its resemblance to a big wheel of aged cheddar cheese. Its smooth, buff-tan rind, flattened shape, and deep ribs make it a standout in the patch, and pumpkins typically weigh between 8 and 15 pounds. But Cheddar isn’t just a pretty rind. Slice it open to reveal dense, dark-orange flesh with a sweet flavor that’s delicious when roasted or puréed into soups, pies, breads, and other fall favorites. Grab one for the porch now, then bring it into the kitchen when you’re ready to add a little extra flavor to your fall menu.
