As spring slowly gives way to summer, we’re entering the easiest time of year to embrace seasonal eating thanks to the abundant, locally grown fruit and vegetable options available at the Dallas Farmers Market. This week the DFM is excited to kick off a five-part Picnic Series for June, pairing blanket-worthy, picnic basket bites with local park location recommendations from Outside, Texas meant to inspire the discovery of all our fresh produce varieties and the incredible outdoor summer fun North Texas has to offer.

Founded in 2019 by friends Josh Florence and Brandon Yates, Outside, Texas began as a small idea for selling Texas-themed apparel and goods, but after a few weekends of testing their merchandise at the Dallas Farmers Market, they knew they were onto something big. Five years later that idea to do something fun on the side has resulted in a new career, the opening of five stores, attending hundreds of festivals and markets across the state, having the Outside, Texas brand in every REI and Whole Earth Provisions in Texas, being at the Dallas Farmers Market almost every weekend, and connecting a LOT of people with the outdoors here in the great state of Texas. Visit their website to check out all the cool merchandise, but stay for an incredible resource highlighting all the best areas to explore throughout Texas. We’re partial to their Top 12 Parks and Trails to Explore Within 60 miles of Dallas.

To really motivate your adventurous side, we’ve teamed up with Outside, Texas to kick off our June Picnic Series with a giveaway of two, one-year Texas State Park Passes (unlimited entry to 88 Texas State Parks), as well as Outside, Texas merch! We’ll share giveaway details tomorrow here!

Remember, with each newsletter we always let you know what’s currently in season in Texas and what’s specifically available at The Shed because finding ways to incorporate seasonal eating into your diet means meals full of flavor, texture, and dense nutrition, all while supporting local farmers and communities. Right now, it is the perfect time to grab the last of The Shed strawberries, whip up our refreshing dessert found below, and head to White Rock Lake Park to enjoy natural areas and plentiful wildlife right here in the heart of Dallas, as well as plenty of picnic areas with nearby playgrounds right off the lake. Don’t miss Winfrey point, one of Brandon’s favorite views of Dallas, and an amazing place to watch the sun set while throwing a frisbee or football. And don’t leave your best friend behind at home as there’s also a three-acre dog park, perfect for letting pups run wild and fetch balls out of the lake.

We’re also excited to announce that the Dallas Farmers Market has joined the World Farmers Markets Coalition in an effort to support the United Nations and its “Zero Hunger” initiative, one of the Sustainable Development Goals for 2030. The World Farmers Markets Coalition believes farmers markets are a means to achieve that goal, and we’re proud to be part of the solution.

We’re ready to welcome summer fun, so come celebrate and support local by starting your best adventures right here at the Dallas Farmers Market.
