Forget that cold, dark day in January for ringing in the new year. The moment to really revel arrives on Friday, March 20, with the official start of spring, and there’s so much to celebrate! Spring brings longer days, warmer nights, and plenty of potential, like thoroughly embracing seasonal eating thanks to the hard-working DFM farmers and ranchers, or finding inspiration to try your own hand at growing.

Begin with engaging sessions led by award-winning Dallas County Master Gardener and Master Naturalist Janet D. Smith, whose passion for native, heat-tolerant, and pollinator-friendly gardening has made her a respected voice in sustainable landscaping. Guided by the philosophy of “right plant, right place,” she will share practical insights that support thriving local ecosystems and attract birds, bees, and butterflies. Join her to learn Facts About Hummingbirds on Saturday, March 21, at 11:30 a.m., followed by Plants that Multitask on Sunday, March 22, at 11:30 a.m.

Then, we’ve partnered with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, a statewide education agency that has improved Texans’ lives for over 100 years through science-based programs in agriculture, natural resources, youth, and health. On Saturday, March 21, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., stop by the Roots to Revenue booth led by Community and Economic Development Prairie View Extension Agent Alexie Horne. Open to both vendors and the general public, the booth will showcase pathways to building careers through agricultural pursuits, entrepreneurship, government contracting, and overall career preparedness.

Take all that growing encouragement and visit Kelley Produce in The Shed next, as it’s overflowing with fresh plant starts, from herbs to peppers to tomatoes. Not sure how to grow in a small space? Join their Herb Potting Workshop on Thursday, March 26, at 6:30 p.m. at the red picnic tables in Pearl St. Plaza. This $35 workshop includes a large pot with three plants and a medium pot with one plant (options of herbs and salad mixes), care instructions, and a recipe card. Janiece will help you every step of the way. It’s a perfect evening for city and beginner gardeners. Space is limited and will go fast, so grab your tickets here.

Get your little gardeners involved in the dirt fun too with Kids Clover Potting Workshops on both Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Join us this weekend at the Dallas Farmers Market to welcome spring with a sense of curiosity and possibility, where every visit is a chance to connect with the community, support local businesses, and discover the everyday joy nature brings.

P.S. You still have time to sneak in some weekday DFM fun with our Spring Break Market, Thursday, March 19, and Friday, March 20, from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., featuring favorite vendors to shop, yard games for the whole family, and plenty of photo ops.
