Colorful pumpkins and winter squash fill The Shed at the Dallas Farmers Market for the start of the fall season.

A WARM WELCOME TO AUTUMN!

While meteorological records are being smashed all over North Texas, the calendar continues to turn pages, and the Dallas Farmers Market is here for it! Fill your mind with cool thoughts and join us this weekend, Saturday, September 19, and Sunday, September 20, as we welcome autumn by kicking off seven festive weeks of all things pumpkin. The Shed will overflow with shades of classic burnt orange and golden yellow, as well as creamy whites, sage greens, and lesser-known slate blues. Make sure to grab one of our favorites, the Cinderella, a classic French heirloom winter squash known for its vivid red-orange color and flattened, deeply ribbed shape that resembles the carriage in Disney’s fairy tale.

More than a Pretty Pumpkin

Weighing 15 to 25 pounds, the Cinderella is prized as a striking autumn decoration, but it truly shines as a culinary ingredient in both sweet and savory dishes. They’re ideal for roasting, baking, or puréeing into pies, breads, soups, and casseroles, and they pair well with turkey, sausage, herbs, and seasonal vegetables. Once cooked, they can be refrigerated for a few days or frozen for longer storage, making them a practical option for fall cooking. Remember: over 80% of the pumpkins in our patch are edible and therefore eligible for SNAP. Stop by the information booth in The Shed to learn how to benefit from SNAP and Double Up Food Bucks here at the DFM. With far more variety than you’ll find at a grocery store, you can choose from:

  • Blue Hubbard
  • Butternut Squash
  • Carnival Squash
  • Cheddar
  • Cinderella
  • Cushaw
  • Enchanted
  • Fairytale
  • Jarrahdale

Flavorful Fall

Just because it doesn’t feel like autumn doesn’t mean it can’t taste like autumn. Get a bit of fall flavor on Saturday, September 19, and Sunday, September 20, at 12:30 in The Shed by enjoying a taste of Pumpkin Spice Compote Butter served on Bread Street Boys’ incredible sourdough bread. Have a bite and get inspired to create your own version at home.

Pumpkin Spice Compote Butter Recipe:

Ingredients

  • 15 oz or 425 g pumpkin purée
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 2 sticks (250 g) room temperature butter
  • 1/2 cup (100 g) light brown sugar

Instructions

  1. Combine the pumpkin purée, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, ginger and cloves in a pan, over medium heat. Cook the purée, stirring frequently, for 15 to 18 minutes, or until smooth and thickened. Look to reduce most of the water in the purée, so once the simmering purée stops producing visible steam, you can take it off the heat. Spread the hot purée in a bowl and set it aside to cool.
  2. Combine the room temperature butter and brown sugar. Mix using a stand-mixer, electric mixer, or hand whisk until most of the sugar has been incorporated. Add the cooked spice pumpkin purée and mix until incorporated.
  3. Serve right away, or store it in the fridge. Serve with fresh toast, pancakes or a slice loaf cake.
