Blueberries are a Dallas Farmers Market summertime favorite for good reason – they’re sweet, easy to eat, and packed with nutrients. They’re especially high in antioxidants, particularly a group called anthocyanins, which give them their deep blue hue. These compounds help fight oxidative stress and may reduce the risk of chronic diseases over time.

But there’s more to this fruit than just a pretty color. One cup of blueberries contains only 80 calories, while still providing four grams of fiber, 24 percent of your daily vitamin C, and plenty of manganese, a mineral important for bone health and metabolism. Plus, research suggests that regular blueberry consumption may help improve memory, support brain health, and even reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering blood pressure and improving cholesterol levels.

Texas blueberry season typically runs from late May through early July, meaning our berries are among the first in the U.S. to be harvested each summer. The most commonly grown variety in Texas is the rabbiteye blueberry, which tolerates our heat and soil far better than northern highbush varieties. Beyond farms and gardens, Texas is also home to native wild blueberries. Vaccinium arboreum, commonly called sparkleberry, grows in wooded areas across the state and produces small, tart berries. While not as widely cultivated, these native plants are an important part of Texas’s natural ecosystem.

Blueberries also freeze incredibly well, holding onto their flavor and nutritional value. That means you can enjoy them long after the harvest season ends by keeping a few bags tucked in your freezer to toss into smoothies, oatmeal, or baked goods all year round.

Locally grown and in-season cantaloupe, peaches, strawberries, and watermelon are all overflowing in The Shed right now, but Texas blueberries are the star of the show this weekend. Stop by Kelley Produce and Heddin Family Farms to stock up on these tiny nutritional heroes for now and for later!
