Everyone knows Dallas does Cinco de Mayo best, but did you know Dallas also invited the frozen margarita machine? According to “The Real History of Cinco de Mayo” by Hannah S. Ostroff of the Smithsonian, the Dallas restaurant staple, Mariano’s Hacienda, invented the first frozen margarita machine in 1971! The restaurant owner, Mariano Martinez, and his friend, Frank Adams, were inspired by 7-Eleven’s Slurpee machine (another chain originally founded in Dallas) to create their own soft-serve machine specifically designed to serve frozen margaritas. The original frozen margarita machine ran for 34 years of service before retiring; the machine now resides at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. Read more about the history of Cinco de Mayo and Dallas’s contributions to the celebration by way of the frozen margarita machine here. In other words, we’ll take a house margarita. 😉
