NO TRICKS, ALL TRADITIONS
Halloween arrives this Saturday, October 31, and with it comes a new tradition taking root at the Dallas Farmers Market. We’re putting our own spin on trick-or-treating with a Seed Scavenger Hunt from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. that’s equal parts fun and educational. Little ghosts and goblins can pick up their scavenger hunt lists at The Shed’s Information Booth, then set out to find seeds while learning which varieties are best, when to plant them, and how to care for them. Along the way, they can personalize seed packets and collect everything needed to start their very own seed library.
For more family fun, Balloon Art by Bender is twisting colorful creations from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, while little ones can get crafty making spider-web snowflakes at Kids’ Activity from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Healthy Plates DFW is also popping up from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The fun continues Sunday with more balloon art from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., a paper sugar-skull Kids’ Activity from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and visits from larger-than-life four-legged friends, Hearty Paws Great Dane Rescue, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Longstanding traditions are worth celebrating, as are those just taking root. Come to the Dallas Farmers Market this weekend to be part of both!
Pumpkin Last Call!
It’s the final call for all things pumpkin, and we saved the best for last. This week’s Pumpkin of the Week is the tried-and-true Jack-O’-Lantern. With its bright orange skin, sturdy stem, and classic round shape, the Jack-O’-Lantern is practically made for carving spooky fun. Typically weighing 10 to 24 pounds, this Halloween favorite takes about 110 days to grow from seed to doorstep decoration. But did you know the tradition of carving Jack-O’-Lanterns began in Ireland, where people originally carved turnips instead of pumpkins? The name comes from the legend of Stingy Jack, a mischievous character doomed to wander the earth with only a glowing coal tucked inside a carved turnip to light his way. Thankfully, pumpkins proved much easier to carve, and a Halloween tradition was born. Whether you’re going for a friendly grin or a frightful face, carve out some Halloween fun by picking up a classic Jack-O’-Lantern at The Shed.
