HURRAY FOR DALLAS’ ORIGINAL WATERMELON DAY®!
As slow summer starts to slip into hectic school schedules, there’s still time to make a few more memories at the Dallas Farmers Market. Local farmers are currently harvesting some of the juiciest, most flavorful watermelons of the season. This tradition dates back to the 1800s, when Texas-grown melons traveled the country by rail. Today, that legacy lives on at the Dallas Farmers Market, where distinctive varieties offer a taste of summer as it used to be. Savor the sweetest time of the year during Dallas’ Original Watermelon Day®, this weekend at the DFM.
Choose from a huge variety of watermelons, including:
- Black Jack (red partially seeded) $15
- Bolita/Sugar Baby (red seedless) $5
- Charlene (red seeded) $15
- Desert King (yellow seeded) $15
- Essence (red seedless) $15
- Moon and Stars (red seedless) $12
- Orange Crisp (seedless) $15
- Orange Krush (seeded) $15
- Red Seeded/Big Sangria $15
- Sun Stone (yellow seedless) lemon! $12
Watermelon tips: Keep whole watermelons at room temperature for the best flavor, then chill them before serving for a perfectly refreshing bite. Once cut, store watermelon in an airtight container or wrap it tightly, then refrigerate for three to five days. Have more melon than you can eat right now? (We encourage this.) Cut it into cubes, freeze it, and save it for smoothies, slushies, and frozen treats. And don’t forget the rind. Turn it into a crunchy, sweet-and-tangy refrigerator pickle to enjoy every part of this summer favorite.
