February is coming to an end, but the inspiring stories and conversations surrounding Black History Month are just beginning. Sharing the experiences and journeys of Black farmers, entrepreneurs, artists can uplift communities through sparking new ideas and removing barriers for the next generation. The connections cultivated at the Dallas Farmers Market extend far beyond the weekend booths; often resulting in support for a young person to take the first step on a creative endeavor. This can potentially mean as a new farmers market vendor, an opportunity for a newcomer in Dallas to find true community, or as a home-away-from-home to reconnection with ones heritage.

This month we had the opportunity to partner with local recipe creator and health food blogger, Adri of @agirlcalledadri, who wow-ed us with her seasonally grounded dishes and connection to the stories of our food. Adri is a huge supporter of local growers and she uses their produce to create flavorful and stunning dishes. Thank you to Adri for sharing your culinary adventures and creating a truly seasonal and impactful meal that roots us in the winter season! The creation of this meal highlights the importance on shopping local as Adri pays tribute to Black history in choosing to cook with collard greens as a primary ingredient. Which were purchased from a Black owned farm – Williams Garden, and crafting a meal with a story that sheds light on the beauty of uncovering cultural foodways as a Black American.

“My favorite green is the collard. As a Black American, it’s been so fascinating the learn about the history of the collard green in the foodways of my ancestors. Collards make the perfect green for celebrating seasonal ingredients during Black history month, because they are in peak season during the winter.”
